Disease Related Malnutrition is a vicious circle formed between malnutrition and chronic disease. A disease state often leads to under nourishment, which in turn exacerbates the original disease and so on.

It has been a professional consensus for some time that the approach of fortifying food is superior to giving supplements; there have been many successful clinical trials that show good outcome. Food fortification consists of taking the food which the patient with DRM actually consumes (usually an inadequate quantity and quality to sustain health and recovery) and enriching it with energy and protein so that the patient eats roughly the same amount and type of food they have grown used to, but providing more energy and protein.

Whilst fine in theory and successful in clinical studies, food fortification has not been as widely used as it might. A major reason for this is the poor functionality of current food fortifiers which alter the taste and texture of food.

The Vitaflo brand has developed, formulated and produced an innovative product range specifically designed to meet the problems of feeding the sick and infirm. The unique products of high nutritional density allow the convenient addition of energy and protein to the daily intake.
